DIFFERENT LEVELS OF DEPRESSION

There is depression, then there is DEPRESSION:

Most depressions are treated with the usual antidepressant medication.  New drugs are extremely effective, either when used alone or in combination with several drugs.  The best treatment outcomes utilize both medication and psychotherapy. However, there are some depressions which are known to be "treatment resistant".  For these people, we need to try something more cutting-edge.

Treatment-Resistant Depressions - Please see Find Your Medicine for an explanation of our Referenced EEG (rEEG) testing for treatment-resistant depressions.

Therapy Options for Depression:

Recent research:

It appears that not all depressions are equal.  There is a form of depression which has an asymmetry in the frontal lobes of the brain in a particular brainwave known as "alpha".  If it can be determined that the patient has this subtype, it may be possible to "train it out" of the brain.

Medication: How to determine which brain responds to which medication

Most patients seeking traditional psychiatric treatment are placed on medication.  Modern medicines are extremely effective with a low side-effect profile.  They can make major differences in peoples' lives, relationships and work environment.  Although many people do not like to take medication, it is worth a trial to see if:

  1. It offers an appreciable difference,
  2. There are few or no side effects.
If either of these criteria are not met, we recommend not taking medication.  But when they work, most people are grateful for having given it a fair trial.  It may take several attempts on different medicines to know which one is needed for a response, but the only real downside is the time it takes to figure it out.
