Mild head injuries (mild Traumatic Brain Injury or MTBI) can be caused by motor vehicle accidents, work related injuries, "slip and fall" accidents, or sports-related injuries. The acceleration / deceleration forces on the brain can cause it to bump against the inside of the skull resulting in contusions. This "whiplash" force can also "shear" or unravel the protective insulation around nerves causing "leaking" of the electrical impulse.
Some head injuries will spontaneously recover. Eighty percent of improvements generally occur within the first six months, with the other 20% taking up to another 18 months. If improvement is not noted within the first six months, or it plateaus at a point where there is still cognitive disruption, then further intervention is necessary.
The Neuro-Therapy Clinic, Inc. offers evaluation and treatment for Mild Traumatic Brain Injury. There is mounting research, including current studies in the military, that a Quantitative EEG (QEEG) may be extremely useful in the identification and understanding of MTBI and its resulting symptoms.
Medications may be used to help address immediate symptoms. In addition, Cognitive Compensatory Skills Retraining can also be effective. In this retraining process, patients essentially learn ways to help maneuver around the deficits. With practice, this can make a huge difference for patients.
